A recent news says that a professor with a team of Indian students is working on an app in order to halt the incidents of fake news that are taking place nowadays over WhatsApp.

Our sources have reported that the team, headed by Ponnurangam Kumaraguru, associate professor of computer science at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-D), Delhi, is working on an app that will at the time of circulation of a particular message inform WhatsApp users about its genuineness.

Talking about the university, Indraprastha Institute is a research-oriented university which basically focuses their research in the fields of computer science, mathematics, electronics, design, social science, and bioscience.

“We are collecting a large amount of data and have asked people to forward our messages on the number 9354325700. These messages will be analyzed, and accordingly, we will develop a model for putting a wrapper on such messages. Through the messages received, we will study the common factors in such messages. The commonality might be an image, a URL or some words. If it is a forwarded message, it is a high probability that it is a fake message,” head of the team Ponnurangam Kumaraguru said.

Besides this, our sources have reported that the application will consist of some color codes that will be assigned to the messages. As of now, there are said to be three colors that will rule the app. Our sources added that the yellow color in the app will display legal content and if the system will not be able to decode the data then a yellow color will be displayed while red color will indicate the fake messages.

As per a recent case of mob lynching, an IT Engineer, Mohammad Azam was suspected to be a child abductor by the people and was beaten to death by a mob of around 200 people in Bidar district of Karnataka. Besides this, in past few weeks,  five other men were lynched at Dhule in the western state of Maharashtra, these people also lost their lives as they became a victim of such rumors being spread on the messenger app.

In order to completely stop such activities, WhatsApp is also testing a new ‘suspicious links’ feature on its Android Beta platform. According to this feature, the suspicious link will be marked as red and the user will be warned before opening the link.
