On Wednesday, the state government of Tamil Nadu wrote a letter to the Prime Minister. The letter stated that the center should not pay attention to Kerala’s proposal to organize an Environmental Impact measurement Study for the erection of a new dam in place of the existing Mullaperiyar reservoir. Regarding the issue, all the opposition parties also accused the government and they also said that the state government should file a case against the environment ministry.
In the letter which was written by the Chief Minister K Palaniswami, he said that last month a committee under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change suggested for funding of Terms of Reference of Kerala’s proposal to organize the Environmental Impact Assessment Study for building a new dam.
He further added that because of the issue, the situation is that the citizens of Tamil Nadu are quite worried and concerned. Also, the Supreme Court order is being dishonoured and two states are left with the heated discussion.
According to the verdict which came in May 2014 he said: the construction of two dams requires the agreement from both the states because the proposal made by Kerala cannot be forced upon Tamil Nadu. He further said Kerala silently acquires the permission for this kind of study for a building of a new dam without even discussing or asking the Tamil Nadu or taking its agreement on the matter.
This was such a rebellious step by them, and later on, the Tamil Nadu had to issue a disapproval notice against the member-secretary of the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife and Wildlife Preservation Officer.
He brought the attention of Prime Minister Modi to former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s letter to him in June 2015, asking his involvement to give orders to the Environment Ministry and its agencies to not to take Kerala’s proposal seriously. After this, the government had removed the proposal from Kerala in July 2015, he said.
In the letter, the chief minister also insisted Modi to give orders to the Environment Ministry to discontinue any future proposal by Kerala on a new dam. And also cancel all the plans that are breaching the orders of the Supreme Court, he added.
