British journalist and Television Host Piers-Morgan was at the receiving end of the social media for his frank but outrageous comments on Twitter in which he made fun of the celebrations back in India for its two medal glory at Rio Olympics. Shuttler P.V. Sindhu and Sakshi Mallik were felicitated by a jubilant Indian public, but the British journalist found it misplaced, embarrassing and exaggerated. Morgan had tweeted that a country of 1.2 billion celebrating two losing medals was very awkward. The tweet was followed by a barrage of tweets by thousands of angry Indian fans led by former cricketer Virendra Sehwag.
The Nawab Of Najafgarh made fun of England’s failure to win a single World Cup in cricket, a game which has its genesis in England.
Sehwag said that Indians cherish every small happiness and the inventor of cricket, England despite having never won a World Cup continues to play the game.
Sehwag was followed by renowned author Chetan Bhagat who reminded that in spite of very poor sports infrastructure the country has won medals and this is amazing. However, Morgan who has been in the past had drawn flak for his distasteful comments on Twitter did not budge from his position and continued to make controversial statements.
He posted that Indian Twitter is useful for trolling and if this could be transferred to the athletes to win some medals in Olympics.
Columnist Sushil Seth also joined the debate. However, the English journalist continued his assault and replied to Sehwag saying that if Kevin Pieterson would have been around England will win the World Cup as they won the World T20 trophy.
We cherish every small happiness’,
But Eng who invented Cricket,&yet2win a WC,still continue to playWC.Embarrassing? https://t.co/0mzP4Ro8H9Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) August 24, 2016
Mr Sehwag’s response immediately went viral on Twitter with over 5,000 retweets and 5,600 likes in two hours.
Not one to back down easily, Mr Morgan shot back saying had Kevin Pietersen still been playing, England would have won the world cup.
Very embarrassing, Legend.
If @KP24 was playing, we’d win the WC.
Just as we won T20 WC & he was Man of Series. https://t.co/50X5YMQSQUÂ Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) August 24, 2016
Sehwag who like his style of batting tore into the Englishman and said that KP is not born in England and was a South African. By the same logic, England should have won the 2007 World Cup when Kevin was playing on the side.
KP is a legend no doubt,bt wasnt he born in SA,&by ur logic Eng shd hv won 2007WC.
Why hv prblm wid our ppl,celbrtng https://t.co/ZigCrzVG05Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) August 24, 2016
Suhel Seth was more vicious and quipped that Steven’s interview was more embarrassing as if he had a diaper in his mouth. Morgan responded and retorted that he never interviewed the ordinary.
However, there were some supporters for Morgan’s view and comedian Karan Talwar tweeted in support of the actor and felt that the celebration did not match the results.
