On an experimental basis, Badminton World federation ( BWF) has introduced the new format of scoring. This will be introduced as a test at the Tata Open India International Challenge which got underway at Cricket club of India (CCI ) courts on Wednesday.
In this testing current scheme, all the matches will be played based on “best of five games of 11 points”. The basis of this shorter former of the game is to attract the spectators. This is the same concept as in cricket introduced the game of T20 over one day cricket. This is the matter of debate whether the system is good or bad. But the badminton legend Vimal Kumar ( former national champion and current coach of Saina Nehwal) didn’t impressed and has a different opinion.
Vimal Kumar told that the new format should be introduced by BWF in some local matches, not at the highest level. In the highest level all the matches must be designed in the older format ( 21 points, best of three games format. He also told that that new format will not test the potential of the player and it will like a lottery.
In the proposed structure games will be very fast. Strength and fitness of the player will not be tested. This has been designed to attract the television viewer and to keep commercial aspect in mind. The former national champion also quoted that it will hardly test the skill of the player at the highest level. This is the same aspect as T20 over 50 over limited cricket matches.
Vimal reiterated that if the matches will go too long, some extra effort to be done by the players. In that case, nobody will complain and feel satisfied.
