Today, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Kerala’s Idukki and Malappuram, predicting heavy rain. Besides this, an orange alert has also been issued by the department for five other districts.

As per the sources, ships and Dornier aircraft have been deployed by the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command on the Kerala coast and L&M Islands. The Navy is broadcasting warnings to fishing boats at sea in several languages.

Amidst the preparations favouring safety for the resident in the state, shutters of 14 dams were opened in Kerala today. The opening of as many as 14 dams shutters will provide discharge of water at 100 cubic per second from Idamalayar dam. Besides this, there have been reports which says that the gates of the Idukki dam might get opened at 11 am to serve the purpose. Reports revealed that the water level at the dam came up to 2,387.68 feet on Friday evening against the full level of 2,403 feet.

Ernakulam District Collector Mohammad Saifullah asked residents not to panic. “All steps have been taken to open relief camps if necessary,” he said. “Control rooms have been opened in taluks. Fishermen have been asked to return, venturing into the sea has been stopped. Beaches in the district are closed. Tourist movement to hill stations has been banned.”

On the other hand, a red alert has also been issued by the India Meteorological Department in Tamil Nadu till Monday, as heavy rain has been forecasted by the department ins the state till Tuesday. As heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places on Sunday, therefore, residents of the coastal areas have been asked to get themselves prepared to evacuate.

Adding more to the preparations, National Disaster Response Force teams were dispatched to various cities including Madurai, Ooty, Kanyakumari and Coimbatore.

32 districts in the state have also been alerted by the government for the predicted heavy rainfalls in the regions, said Tamil Nadu MP Udhaya Kumar. Kumar also revealed that all the possible precautionary measures against the predicted heavy rainfalls have been taken.

Our news sources have also reported that schools in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Tirunelveli districts remained closed on Friday.
