In a new study, researchers have unveiled that the Moon has shifted axis its axis by five degrees in last three billion years.

Scientists have used the data collected by the Lunar Prospector mission of NASA in the late 90s to identify a pair of hydrogen-rich regions located near the poles of the Moon. In the study, the distribution of ancient water ice is also indicated on the lunar body serving as the medium of water to the early years of the solar system. The ice on the Moon is protected from the heat of the Sun by craters around the poles of the Moon.

Moon’s icy patches are opposite to each other and the line present between them passes through the middle of the Moon, appearing that it used to be its spin axis. Water ice can exist on the moon of Earth in areas of permanent shadow. The axis has shifted at least six degrees over the course of 1 billion years. The heating within the interior of the moon caused the face we currently see to shift upwards as the pole that has physically changed positions. With the movement of the pole, the Man on the Moon turned his nose up at the Earth.

The likely explanation for the shift is the volcanic activity in the region named Procellarum, that took place over several billion years. Researchers found that the ice that survived during the shift builds a path along with which the axis moved. The only planetary bodies that have permanently shifted the location of their axis are Earth, Mars, Saturn’s moon Enceladus and Europa, the Jupiter’s Moon.

Researchers think that objects in the sky have always been like the way we view them and in this case, the face is so familiar for us.
