The Prime Minister of India shares the grief for the unsuccess of the Triple Talaq Bill and said “Economic growth will be incomplete without social transformation. The triple talaq bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha although it could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha. I assure the Muslim women that the whole country stands by them to provide them social justice,” in his radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat’.
Mr. Modi even thanked and showed “heartfelt gratitude” to all the lawmakers for the smooth functioning of the monsoon session of the parliament.
The triple Talaq bill was proposed in order to end the old practice of divorce followed by the Muslim community which shatters the life of Muslim women.
The Modi govt succeeded in getting an approval of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill in the Lok Sabha on December 28, 2017, because of the majority but it got stuck in Rajya Sabha where it does not hold the majority. The opposition demanded the bill be sent to a Select Committee of the House which has members from all parties for a closer examination.
The new bill proposes for a three-year jail term for men who divorce their wives through instant triple talaq and even apex court has called the triple talaq invalid.
The Prime Minister assured his support for the women of the Muslim community and to end up the practice.
Mr. Modi said that no civil society could bear any kind of injustice towards women. The nation will not accept rapes. To curb the crimes, Parliament has made provisions of strictest punishment by passing the Criminal Act Amendment Bill. He even shared that those who were found guilty of rape would get a minimum ten-year jail sentence whereas those involved in raping minor girls would get a death sentence.
The Prime Minister even shared about the Mandsaur case of Madhya Pradesh and said that the criminals who raped a minor girl were awarded death sentence within two months of hearing of the case in court.
Mr. Modi said,”This Act will play an effective role in curbing crimes against women and girls.”
