Scientists are studying Mars for many years. They are of the view that it has geological features like Earth and Moon. They have observed the surface of red planets through pictures taken from varied sources. Some of these pictures show the presence of water on the surface of the Red Planet. They say that the rains change the surface of Mars. A new study in Journal Icarus has revealed that heavy rains on Mars have changed its surface and carved out river-like channels on it. They are of the view that the changes in the atmosphere on Mars have resulted in heavy rains. These heavy rains have the same impact on the surface of Mars as heavy rains show an impact on the surface of Earth.

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and has Earth-like features. There are many evidences of heavy rainfall on this planet. Scientists are of the view that these rainfalls formed valleys and craters on the surface. But, they also say that there is no rain on Mars surface nowadays. Two researchers at John Hopkins University US say that there was rainfall in the past. This rain was heavy enough to change the planet’s surface.

Many scientists have analyzed the nature of rainfall on the Earth. They have never tried to apply the same physics to rainfall on Mars. To judge the effect of rainfall on Martian surface, scientists have to analyze the changes in the atmosphere first. Atmospheric pressure has a great impact on the size of the rain drops. In earlier days, there was more atmospheric pressure on Mars than nowadays. The raindrops were in the shape of fog then. As the pressure decreased, the raindrops grew bigger in size. The rainfall became heavy enough to cut the soil and alter the craters.

The water then made channels to flow and cut through the surface to make big valleys. The relationship between atmosphere, rain drops size and intensity of rainfall has shown that Mars would have seen some big rain drops. These big drops have changed its surface. They believe that the atmospheric pressure on Mars to be 4 bars in the past. When this pressure reached 1.5 bars, the raindrops grew bigger. These bigger drops would have fallen hard and changed the surface of the planet.

If the pressure on Mars would have been equal to earth, the rain drops would have a size of 7.3mm. This size is 1mm bigger than Earth.
