CHENNAI: The uncertainty of the exact state of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha health is increasing, voices asking for who is running the state in her absence is growing. The state Governor enquired about the working of the government with the Chief Executive of the state hospitalized.
With no second-rung leader in the AIADMK which unlike its bitter rival DMK does not have any other leader who is even a tenth of the party supreme’s stature, the question of who will handle the mantle of the party in Jayalalithaa’s absence has acquired new urgency. Jayalalitha had ensured that her reign remained supreme and had crushed any dissenting voice and this had made it impossible for any other leader to even project him or her as an alternative, even in situations like the present one.
Meanwhile, the Governor has met on Friday the state’s Chief Secretary and two senior ministers, O Panneerselvam and E K Palanisamy. Mr. Panneerselvam had substituted for Ms. Jayalalitha when she was arrested on corruption charges in 2014 before she was acquitted nine months later.

Hoping the TN CM would recover soon is one thing, but blocking the CM seat is another. We all wish for her speedy recovery. But for the proper functioning of government, an interim CM is necessary. Plus the rumors have been very unpleasant about the nature of illness and conspiracies. Looking in this light, this is the right move.
