A team of international astronomers has identified a brown star which is too tiny for nuclear fusion. The star has the highest known mass and is purest in combination. The object is referred as SDSS J0104+1535 and it is a member of halo. Halo is the outermost part of our galaxy and comprises of the oldest stars. The discovery was reported in ‘Monthly Notices of Royal Astronomical Society’.

Brown dwarfs are the in-between proper star and a planet. Their mass is quite small for nuclear fusion of hydrogen to helium, to happen. However, they are larger than the planets.

SDSS J0104+1535is situated in the constellation Pisces which is 750 light years far. It is made of gas which is about two fifty times purer than the sun. This is why the brown dwarf has of more than 99.99% helium and hydrogen. This brown dwarf was shaped about 10 billion years back. According to the measurements, its mass is 90 times more than Jupiter. This means it is an enormous brown dwarf that has been found till date.

Earlier it was not known whether or not brown dwarfs could form a primordial gas such as this. This discovery opens the way to many more undiscovered pure brown dwarfs that belong to our Galaxy’s ancient time.

Dr. Zeng Hua Zhang from the Institute of Astrophysics in the Canary Islands is the man who led the research team; They did not expect to find a brown dwarf which was so pure. Now that they have found one they are sure that there are many such brown dwarfs in the galaxy that are yet to be found. The finding would come as a surprise to the astronomers now, he said.

With the help of its optical and near-infrared spectrum, the SDSS J0104+1535 has been categorized as L-type ultra subdwarf.
